The process of getting a vehicle MOT tested and why it is a requirement

The MOT test is mandatory for all vehicles in the UK, and they should annually get tested, post completing three years. The primary reason for the MOT test coming about was that people did not bother taking their cars to garages regularly.

A study showed that most people said that they would get their cars checked, only if they were giving them visible issues. This information implied that many people around the UK could be driving cars that were not only were putting themselves in danger but also others on the road.

Unfortunately, most of the people going through the MOT test do not understand a lot about vehicles or have information about conducting them. They find the MOT test process quite a mysterious, while they leave their vehicle at a garage or test centre, waiting and hoping it doesn’t mean a high bill for repairs. While the rules state that they should maintain a vehicle that is always roadworthy, people consider getting their car repaired and tested together or around the same time.

The MOT checks review the safety of the vehicle, along with its roadworthiness and exhaust emissions on UK roads. While the tests are mandatory for cars, they also cover vehicles from small motorcycles under 200cc to lorries, designed to prevent driving vehicles that could have a potentially dangerous fault. In May 2018, the Government introduced stricter measures for MOT tests, since they found that the tests needed an upgrade because they were using the same old ones. These tests had more than one million cars labelled ‘dangerous’ by the end of the year, and they didn’t seem to be getting any easier. The tests include a range of checks on various parts of your car to make sure they meet the minimum standards laid out by the Driving and Vehicle Standards Authority.

These checks include checking the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is present and legible and a check that your registration plate (number plate) is secure, legible, and in the correct format. There are more detailed mechanical tests like inspecting the lights, steering and suspension, wipers and washer bottle to make sure the windscreen is always clean. Inspecting the windscreen, seatbelts, seats, fuel system, emissions, doors, mirrors, wheels and tyres, brakes and many other aspects of the car. People can also check MOT online or even book MOT slots online so that they would not have to wait for a long time at the garage.

Many of these items are quick and easy to check yourself before taking your car for its MOT test. However, people should get their vehicles checked by professionals at a garage, if they are planning on passing the test, or avoiding a retest. Some of the issues are as simple as checking lightbulbs and making sure the proper amounts of fluid are in the car, including refilling the windscreen washer bottle.

The MOT tests were temporarily on hold, and people going through them were allowed to delay getting tested. Now, the mandatory MOT testing is to be reintroduced from 1st August 2020 as lockdown restrictions were slowly lifted. In March, drivers were granted a six-month exemption from MOT testing due to the coronavirus outbreak.
