Place & Making Institute in Thamesmead
Keppie Design have unveiled visionary proposals for a state-of-the-art Learning Campus at Thamesmead for the London Borough of Bexley and their partners Peabody and London Southeast Colleges. The proposals – known as The Place & Making Institute – will be located at the centre of one of Europe’s largest regeneration projects.
The project will bring together on one site several facilities with a mission to promote related learning and enterprise. The world-leading innovation campus will promote and enable collaboration between industry and educational institutions, ensuring that the curricula best meets the future needs of employers and learners.
The Place and Making Institute will feature:
• A creative Learning Place of Design-related Institutes
• A Construction College
• A 6th Form College
• An Administrative Hub, and Business Collaboration Spaces set in a vibrant, connected and inspirational landscaped campus
Speaking at the launch of the project in the GLA building in London, Gill Steward, Chief Executive of the London Borough of Bexley said: “The Place and Making Institute is a fantastic idea. We’re really proud of the concept we’ve come up with. One of the really important things we want this institute to do is raise the aspirations not just of the people who build new communities, who make places, but of the people who start to get into these professions. We want people to be excited about the career opportunities of making a place”.
John Lewis, Executive Director, Thamesmead said: “Thamesmead is a place of great aspiration. It was an area that was formed in 1967 to really bring a new area to both the boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley, and I think what Thamesmead is now bringing to us is this opportunity in Bexley to have a major new growth area as part of it’s big expansion plan. But of course as we start to develop more housing, more jobs or leisure opportunities we need skills to create great places.”
Keppie’s Design Director, David Ross said: “A unique opportunity now exists to forge a new identity for Bexley; for Thamesmead, and Erith, and Abbey Wood and Belvedere. This new identity would be predicated on Education, partnership, engagement and training, and it will see Bexley become the Capital of the Maker Movement. We are honoured to have been invited to assist in creating such an exciting vision.”
