Just Like Being There: Gig Posters
Thursday, February 28, 2013 | 5:30-9:30 pm
Vox Theater, 1405 Southwest Blvd. Kansas City, Kansas
Enter the world of rock show “gig posters” and the artist community behind them. Designed to capture the experience of seeing your favorite musicians – The Black Keys before they were famous, Modest Mouse on tour for the first time, or Neko Case in a small club – these custom art prints are part of a contemporary movement that took off in the 1990s and remain more popular than ever today.
Personal. Inspired. Collectible. See these amazing works of art on display at the historic, recently-renovated Vox Theater. Join us for a special screening of Just Like Being There, which made its debut at last year’s SWSX Festival, followed by a Q&A with the director. Featuring artists like Tyler Stout, Olly Moss, Jay Ryan, Daniel Danger and Kevin Tong, the film goes deep into the cultural phenomenon of gig posters:
“In this world, these are the titans, and this film explores their lives, their inspirations, their insecurities and the stories behind their art.”
Food and beverages, live music. Advanced registration recommended. Bring Eventbrite ticket to the door.
Grasshopper Design + Fabrication: 3-Day Workshop by Live Architecture Network (LaN)
Thursday, February 28 & Friday March 1 | 5:00-9:00 pm and Saturday March 2 | 8:00 am-5:00 pm
Kansas City Design Center, 1018 Baltimore, Kansas City, Missouri
Gain valuable lessons in automated machining and digital fabrication to improve workflow, from the earliest design stages through production. By utilizing these new laser-cutting processes, workshop participants will gain a full understanding of rationalizing 3-D design into geometries reconstructed through laser-cut sheet material and file preparations.
Described as visual programming for Rhinoceros 5 (Rhino), Grasshopper is a plug-in that enables a parametric design environment for designing relationships versus explicit objects or forms. Sessions will focus on the nature of information processing and how it can be used to manipulate data stream inputs from various sources and use data feeds to inform geometry or data structures. Participants will also learn the basic functionality of this vast interface.
Workshop is designed to accommodate various levels of experience. Those with no Rhino experience will quickly become more adept through integrated exercises focused on modeling for fabrication. Those with some prior Rhino experience will be able to move beyond the basics of modeling, while gaining a wider understanding of its design compatibility via the parametric features of Grasshopper. All participants will learn how to drive design intentions in sync with machining processes.
The Finale. LaN will close the event with a presentation of its current 2012 LIVING FORCES focus (the accumulation of personal health data to drive architectural design) intermixed with critical points of digital design and manufacture. Workshop participants will also present their process and installation. The finale is free and open to the public.
About Live Architecture Network. LaN directs global workshops on digital design + fabrication in architecture – offering diverse educational sessions in 18 countries since 2008. “Grasshopper Design + Fabrication” will be led by Director Monika Wittig and her colleague.
For complete Workshop Schedule, contact Dawn Taylor, [email protected].
Registration. Note that registrations are needed by February 14, 2013. Fees are non-refundable unless the minimum amount of registrations is not achieved by this date; in that event, KCDW will cancel the event and refund all registrations. Workshop attendees should have a basic understanding of computer modeling and design and bring their own computer with Rhino 5 installed (free download @ http://www.rhino3d.com/download/rhino/5.0/evaluation). Other free software downloads will be provided at event day. KCDW will provide all consumables for the fabrication portion of the workshop.
Workshop limited to 35 people. Must register by Feb. 14. Note ticket processing fee; to register with no fee, call 816-221-3485.
